How to Wear an Oversized Tee Without Looking Sloppy

There's a line between an oversized tee and a tee that's just too large, and it comes down to a few centimetres in the right places. Get it right and the fit looks deliberate. Get it wrong and it looks like you grabbed the wrong size.

The shoulder seam is everything

On a regular-fit tee, the shoulder seam sits on the edge of your shoulder. On a proper oversized tee, it drops — but only by a few centimetres, landing on the upper arm rather than partway to your elbow.

If the seam is falling close to your elbow, the tee isn't oversized, it's too big. That's the single fastest way to tell.

Our snow washed oversized tee and Dream In Motion oversized tee are both cut with a deliberate drop shoulder rather than simply scaled up.

Balance the proportions

The rule is simple: if the top is loose, the bottom should be fitted, or vice versa. Oversized on top and oversized on the bottom reads as shapeless.

  • Oversized tee + leggings or bike shorts — the strongest and easiest combination
  • Oversized tee + fitted or straight-leg pants — clean and structured
  • Oversized tee + wide-leg or barrel pants — works, but only if the tee is tucked or cropped to define the waist

Length should stop at the hip

An oversized tee should end somewhere around your hip bone or slightly below. Longer than mid-thigh and it starts reading as a dress rather than a tee.

If your tee is longer than you'd like, a front tuck fixes it instantly — tuck just the front hem into your waistband and leave the back loose. It defines your waist without losing the relaxed shape.

Heavier fabric drapes better

This is what separates a good oversized tee from a cheap one. Lightweight jersey in an oversized cut clings and shows every line underneath. Heavier cotton — around 7 to 8 oz — hangs away from the body and holds the boxy shape it was cut for.

Our Essential Cotton Tee is a 7.7 oz cotton for exactly this reason.

Sizing: don't automatically size up

An oversized tee is already cut oversized. Sizing up on top of that gives you the too-big look described above.

Buy your normal size first. Only size up if you want a deliberately extreme fit and you're pairing it with something very fitted below.

Washed finishes add depth

A flat, brand-new black tee can look plain in an oversized cut, because there's nothing for the eye to catch on. Washed, faded and sunfade finishes give the fabric texture and make the volume look intentional.

That's the thinking behind pieces like our sunfade hoodie — the finish does the work that a print would otherwise have to.

Quick checklist

  • Shoulder seam on the upper arm, not near the elbow
  • Hem at the hip, not mid-thigh
  • Fitted bottom half to balance the volume
  • Heavier cotton for better drape
  • Your normal size, not a size up
